A new study out of UC Berkeley finds the practice of lane splitting poses no additional danger to motorcyclists. California law allows for the maneuver, which is the act of a motorcyclist passing stalled traffic by going in between lanes. The study was released by UC Berkeley and was commissioned by the California Highway Patrol and the Office of Traffic Safety. It found lane splitting is no more dangerous than just riding a motorcycle.

On Friday, July 13, California became the fourth state in the country to oppose roadside checkpoints that target motorcyclists.  Governor Jerry Brown signed Assembly Bill 1047 into law starting January 1 2013, joining with Virginia, North Carolina and New Hampshire in prohibiting law enforcement agencies from using safety grant money to fund motorcycle-only checkpoints.

California Senate Bill 350 Regulating Lane Sharing Splitting

California Senate Bill 350, introduced, on Feb, 20th, regulating lane splitting related to motorcycle operation. This bill would prohibit, with an exception for a peace officer, as
provided, a person operating a motorcycle from passing another vehicle in a portion of a lane occupied by that vehicle unless certain conditions are met, including that the passing occurs during traffic congestion, and the passing occurs at a safe speed. Because the failure to comply with these provisions would constitute an infraction under the Vehicle Code, this bill would impose a state-mandated local program.
